How it Works: Windshield replacement, When it comes time to replace a modern automobile windshield there's a bit more to consider than just seeing clearly.

The Facts: Doubtless the most evident consideration is that having a cracked windshield is not only a visible impairment to safe motoring, but might also prompt a talk with an officer of the law. A line-of-sight windshield crack or bull's-eye that obstructs vision is considered illegal in many states. Having a pro installer travel to your business or home to replace a windshield can save the price tag and time concerned in clearing up a citation. Moreover, the specialized catalyzed adhesives used to form the chemical bond that safely holds modern car glass in place are not only expensive, they play an important part in passenger safety in many modern vehicles.

Cracked windshields can also let in moisture, which could cause hidden corrosive rust to form on the essential steel and compromise the adhesive bond of the glass to the automobile. What looks fine from the outside might be a catastrophe forming beneath. Today's car windshields do far more than keep the wind, rain, and bugs off your face. There's more to it then meets the eye.

Windshield Replacement Processes. Disconnect the wipers, mirror and any other objects close to the windshield glass. Take away the bolts or clips on the wipers and unscrew the mirror. Tape over the heating vents to shield them from glass shards.

Important Information: Check the rubber gasket sealing the glass to the frame. It must be modified if it is cracked or hard. Cut it off by pushing a knife into the rubber ( don't hit the glass ) and slicing all the way round the edge. If the gasket is good, run a wood stick across its outer edge to wreck the seal between the rubber and frame so that you can put it aside.

Take away the glass by pushing it out from within the vehicle. Push gently ( don't kick ) with your foot and the stick along the head of the glass. Have a second person on the outside to catch the glass.

Take away the windshield gasket ( if re-usable ) from the old glass and place it on the new windshield, making sure the thicker, heavier end runs along the inner side of the glass. If the gasket is new, remove its sealant and let it warm in the sun before installing it.

Clean all rust and dirt off the window frame and dashboard. Coat the replacement windshield gasket's outer groove with petroleum jelly and run a nylon cord along it. Use enough twine and center it so that both ends of the wire stick out at least two feet from the gasket's lower center.

Place the replacement glass onto the windshield frame from the outside of the automobile, but tuck the cord's loose ends into the inside. Take one end of the cord from inside the car and slowly pull it out of the gasket to pull its inner lip in place . Have your helper push on the rubber to keep it prepared.
